What is TaxDekho India?

In last few years i heard this many times from friends and colleauges that they dont really understand their salary structures and although their company is paying them something but they dont really know how much every month they are getting as salary. Infact most of them never really understoof their CTC properly ever and to do something to ease this confusion i though of building an excel shaaet which later took shape of this app. This app helps user understand that CTC , deductions, net in-hand in a clear and easy way. Then on top of that it is also helping user understand which regime is best for them based on their current CTC. The tax calculator in this app is built to give the Indian salaried professional the complete picture: a step-by-step derivation of taxable income, a side-by-side regime comparison with rupee savings, a retirals corpus projection, and the reasoning behind every number on screen.

The app is built entirely around the Income Tax Act 2025 (which replaced the 60-year-old 1961 Act from 1 April 2026) and the IT Rules 2026, which brought significant changes — a 30× increase in the Children's Education Allowance, expanded HRA 50% city coverage to 8 cities, and higher meal coupon exemption limits. Every formula is traceable to a specific statutory section.

IT Rules 2026 Compliance

Updated allowance limits: Children's Education ₹3K/month, Hostel ₹9K/month, Meal coupon ₹200/meal. HRA 50% list expanded to 8 cities. All limits traceable to CBDT notification.

The Maths Behind the App

Every formula is derived directly from primary statutory sources — the Income Tax Act 2025, the Payment of Gratuity Act 1972, and the IT Rules 2026. Each calculation traces to a specific section.

HRA Exemption — Sec 10(13A)
// Minimum of three values (Old Regime only) HRA_Exempt = min( Actual HRA received, 50% × Basic // 8 cities, IT Rules 2026 40% × Basic // all other cities Rent Paid − 10% × Basic )
IT Rules 2026, Rule 279: 50% list expanded from 4 to 8 cities — Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad. Delhi-NCR (Gurgaon/Noida) stays at 40%.
Gratuity — Payment of Gratuity Act 1972
// Covered employees (10+ headcount orgs) Gratuity = Monthly_Basic × 15 × Years ÷ 26 // 6-month rounding: if final year > 6 months // count it as a full year Gratuity = min(calculated, ₹20,00,000)
Minimum 5 years continuous service. Death/disablement: 5-year rule waived. Uses monthly Basic+DA only — not gross or CTC. ₹20L cap applies to private sector employees.
EPF Corpus Projection
// Monthly compound interest (EPFO model) for each month m: Bal = (Bal + Monthly_Contrib) × (1 + EPF_Rate ÷ 12) // Taxable interest: EE+VPF > ₹2.5L/year Taxable_Int = max(0, (EE_Contrib + VPF − ₹2.5L) × Rate )
Current EPFO rate: 8.25% p.a. Interest on excess EE+VPF contributions above ₹2.5L/year became taxable from FY 2021-22 under Finance Act 2021.
Tax Computation — Rebate & Surcharge
// New Regime 87A rebate (ITA 2025) if taxable ≤ ₹12L → rebate = full tax if taxable ≤ ₹12.75L → marginal relief // Surcharge on high incomes > ₹50L: +10% | > ₹1Cr: +15% > ₹2Cr: +25% | > ₹5Cr: +37% Final_Tax = (Tax + Surcharge) × 1.04 // cess
Marginal relief ensures effective tax never exceeds the marginal income increment for taxpayers just crossing the ₹12L threshold.
Capital Gains — Post Finance Act 2024
// Equity LTCG (held > 12 months) LTCG_Tax = max(0, LTCG − ₹1.25L) × 12.5% // Equity STCG (held ≤ 12 months) STCG_Tax = STCG × 20% // Property LTCG (no indexation post 2024) Prop_Tax = LTCG_Property × 20% // Debt MF (post Apr 2023) → slab rate
Finance Act 2024: Equity LTCG 10%→12.5%, exemption ₹1L→₹1.25L. STCG 15%→20%. All CG taxes carry 4% cess. Debt MF indexation benefit removed from April 2023.
IT Rules 2026 — Updated Allowance Limits
// Children Education Allowance Exempt = min(received, ₹3,000/mo × 2 children) // Was ₹100/month — 30× increase // Hostel Expenditure Allowance Exempt = min(received, ₹9,000/mo × 2 children) // Was ₹300/month — 30× increase // Meal / Food Coupon (both regimes) Exempt = min(received, ₹200/meal × 2 × 22d)
All three limits updated by IT Rules 2026 notified by CBDT, effective 1 April 2026. Education and hostel allowances apply under Old Regime only. Meal exemption applies in both regimes.

Slabs Applied in the Engine

Tax slabs are unchanged for FY 2025-26 per Budget 2026. The app reads the user's date of birth from their profile and automatically applies the correct Old Regime age bracket.

Your Data Never Leaves Your Phone

TaxDekho India was designed with a single non-negotiable principle: your salary and financial data belongs to you, lives on your device, and goes nowhere else. There is no backend, no server, no account, no cloud.

🔒
Zero Data Transmission

No salary figures, no tax numbers, no personal details are ever sent over the internet. The app performs all calculations entirely on-device. There is no server receiving anything from you — ever.

📱
100% Local Storage

All data — profiles, salary inputs, saved sessions, investment plans, offer comparisons — is stored using Android's AsyncStorage, which is sandboxed to the app and inaccessible to other apps or services.

🔑
Password Hashing

App passwords are never stored in plain text. They are converted to a one-way hash before being saved locally. Even if someone extracted your device storage, your password cannot be recovered from it.

📡
Works Fully Offline

After installation, TaxDekho India requires no internet connection at any point. Every feature — analysis, projections, PDF export, offer comparison — works completely offline on any Android device.

🚫
No Analytics or Tracking

There are no analytics SDKs, no crash reporters, no usage trackers, and no advertising libraries embedded in the app. No third party receives any information about how you use TaxDekho India.

🗑️
You Control Your Data

You can delete all app data at any time using the Clear All Data option in Settings, or by simply uninstalling the app. There is no account to close, no server-side record to request deletion of.

Our Privacy Commitment

ArthRoute Studios built TaxDekho India on a local-first principle because financial data is sensitive and belongs to the person who earns it. We will never add analytics, ads, or any form of data collection to TaxDekho India. The app has no backend infrastructure — there is literally no server to send your data to, and no account on our end that could be compromised. Your salary numbers are yours alone.

The Journey of Building It

TaxDekho India was built by a salaried professional who wanted to understand his own tax situation fully — not just get a number, but trace every rupee from CTC to take-home. The development used AI coding assistance throughout, iterating through multiple rounds of feature additions, formula corrections, and UI refinements across the full tax engine and seven app screens.

The calculation engine was built from first principles, referencing CBDT statutory text and cross-verified against real-world salary scenarios. Each change in the Finance Acts from 2021 to 2024, and the newly enacted IT Rules 2026, was individually researched and implemented — from the corrected gratuity formula with ₹20L cap to the expanded 8-city HRA list.

Phase 1
Core Tax Engine

Built the complete FY 2025-26 tax engine — Old and New Regime slabs, all 80C/80D/24b deductions, HRA exemption, EPF taxability, capital gains flat rates, 87A rebate with marginal relief, and surcharge computation.

Phase 2
App Features

Added 7 analysis tabs, profile system with Login ID and password, retiral goal planner with EPF/NPS split, offer comparison engine, investment planner with risk profiles, session save and PDF export.

Phase 3
Law & Compliance

Updated for IT Act 2025 and IT Rules 2026 — corrected gratuity formula, updated HRA 8-city list, new education/hostel/meal allowance limits, and age-based Old Regime slab auto-detection from profile DOB.

Key Lessons Learned

Tax calculation is deceptively complex. What looks like a simple salary slip hides dozens of interacting rules — HRA min-of-three, 6-month rounding for gratuity, EPF taxability thresholds, marginal relief logic — each of which must be modelled exactly per statutory text.

Domain knowledge is a superpower. Being a salaried professional who actively uses these tax rules made it possible to identify calculation bugs that purely technical analysis would miss. Every formula was cross-verified against real-world scenarios.

React Native + Expo is genuinely powerful for solo builders. The combination of a managed workflow, EAS cloud builds, and the expo-* package ecosystem meant no native toolchain setup — the entire build pipeline ran from a Windows laptop to the Play Store.

Local-first is the right default for a financial app. Storing all personal and financial data on the device, with zero external transmission, removes an entire class of security and privacy concerns — and makes the app work fully offline after installation.

🛡️

100% Local — Zero Data Transmitted. TaxDekho India stores all personal and financial data exclusively on the user's device via AsyncStorage. No analytics, no tracking, no external account creation. Passwords are stored as one-way hashes. The app works fully offline after installation.
